Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Using appropriate personal protective equipment, move
exposed subject to fresh air. If breathing is difficult or
ceases, ensure and maintain ventilation. Give oxygen as
appropriate. Obtain medical attention.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash immediately with clean and gently flowing water.
Continue for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Using appropriate personal protective equipment, remove
contaminated clothing and flush exposed area with large
amounts of water. Obtain medical attention if skin reaction
occurs, which may be immediate or delayed.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Never attempt to induce vomiting. Do not attempt to give any
solid or liquid by mouth if the exposed subject is
unconscious or semi-conscious. Wash out the mouth with
water. If the exposed subject is fully conscious, give
plenty of water to drink. Obtain medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Carbon dioxide, dry powder or foam extinguishers are
recommended.

Do not use water extinguishers. Water jets may intensify the
fire or be ineffective.

Product arising from burning: The substance is combustible and will burn if involved in
a fire, evolving noxious fumes (e.g. carbon oxides and
bromine and fluorine containing compounds).

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Self contained breathing apparatus and full protective
equipment are recommended for fire-fighters.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Personal Precautions:

The substance boils at 17 deg C and is often used at
temperatures below this. Stop leak and eliminate all sources
of ignition (no smoking, sparks or flames). Fence or cordon
the affected area and do not allow individuals to touch or
walk through the spilled material unless wearing appropriate
protective clothing. Wear protective clothing and equipment
consistent with the degree of hazard.

Environmental Precautions:

Do not allow this material to enter surface drainage
systems, sewers and poorly ventilated areas. The substance
is known to damage the ozone layer, therefore atmospheric
release should be avoided.

Any water used to deal with a spillage should not be
discharged to drain, as atmospheric release is then likely
to occur at the STP.

Clean-up Methods:

Treat any liquid with 5 - 10% DABCO (1,4-
diazabicyclooctane)in N,N-dimethylformamide. Spread an inert
absorbent on the spill and place in a suitable, properly
labelled container for recovery or disposal. Following
removal of spillage, wash down spillage area with copious
amounts of water only if waste water can be directed to an
on-site waste water treatment system. Equipment used for
clean-up should be earthed (grounded) and non-sparking.

Decontamination Procedures:

Contaminated material acquired during manufacture or use are
chemically treated as explained in the "clean-up" method
before disposed off appropriately as the notified chemical
is an ozone depleting agent. Precautions should be taken
during decontamination as the substance will quickly
evaporate in a well ventilated area.

Handling and storage

Handling: The substance should be stored, handled and used under
conditions of good industrial hygiene and in conformity with
any local regulations in order to avoid exposure.

Assess all operations involving this material for potential
fire explosion risks and take suitable precautions based on
the guidance provided.

Depending upon scale of operation, a fume cupboard or other
type of exhaust ventilation is recommended to routinely
control exposure to this material.

Ensure that any area in which this material is handled has
sufficient ventilation to avoid the build up of vapour and
to control employee potential exposure to volatiles below
National Exposure Limits.

Storage: Keep material in sealed containers in a cool, well-
ventilated area away from sources of ignition.

Avoid prolonged storage at elevated temperatures (greater
than room temperature, approximately 20 Deg.C).

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Manufacture:

BFM is packaged and despatched in stainless steel cylinders
(approx 1.75 kg per cylinder). The cylinders are over packed
into a high density polyethylene UN approved (1H2/222/S)
kegs fitted with a polystyrene insert. Typically 5 cylinders
per keg.

The cylinders are specifically designed to hold liquids and
gases. The cylinders are stamped and approved for transport
(DOT 3A). They are made from 304 L stainless steel and
pressure rated to 1800 psi. Each despatch is shipped in a
dedicated transport container.

Use:

BFM is supplied to Montrose by Excelsyn in pressure rated
stainless steel cylinders, each containing 1.75 kg of BFM.
Each cylinder is equipped with a discharge valve that is
fitted with a threaded plug to minimise the risk of valve
failure/leakage during transportation/storage. In addition
the valve is protected by a steel cap to prevent damage to
it during handling. Up to five cylinders may be stored in a
keg filled with shock absorbent material for transport to
Montrose. The empty cylinders are similarly stored for
return to Excelsyn.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: Keep this material away from all forms of ignition such as
open flames, mechanical sparks, frictional heat and hot
surfaces.

Chemical reaction with water: None known.

Dust explosion: Not applicable, the substance is a gas.

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: There will be no discharge to the environment. Recovery from
minor spillages or accidental discharge is not economically
or technically feasible, and such waste material will be
disposed of by incineration. In principle, it may be
possible to recover larger spillages of uncontaminated
material for subsequent use.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The notification tests have shown that the substance is
extremely flammable, harmful by inhalation and it is
considered dangerous for the ozone layer. Furthermore, using
information from similar substances (see section 0.5) it is
also considered to be a skin, respiratory tract and eye
irritant as well as a cat. 3 carcinogen.

No chemical treatment is practicable to neutralise the
hazardous health properties nor the hazardous environmental
properties.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance can be disposed of by incineration by burning
under controlled conditions at a licensed waste treatment
processor in accordance with local regulations. Stack gases
must be scrubbed, because noxious fumes (e.g. carbon
oxides and bromine and fluorine containing compounds) could
be formed.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance should not be discharged directly to the
sewage system or the aqueous environment.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: None known.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable.

Public at large - Possibility of neutralisation: Not applicable.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not applicable.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Not applicable.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not applicable.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - others: None.
