The skin irritation and eye irritation of Magnesium perchlorate was predicted with OECD QSAR Toolbox v4.3.1 using experimental results of the closely analogue substance Lithium perchlorate (CAS 7791-03-9). This analogue was tested for its eye irritation and skin irritation according to OECD 437 and OECD TG 439, respectively. Since the perchlorate is considered to trigger the toxicity, this approach is justified and considered as entirely appropriate to draw conclusions on the skin and eye irritation of Magnesium perchlorate. However, the registrant is prepared to conduct an experimental study but considered it as not necessary at first instance taking into account the available results.

Justification for classification or non-classification

- skin irritation: The predicted tissue viability of 29.5 % is below the cut off value for classification, which is </= 50 % as stated in OECD TG 439, identifying a test chemical as requiring classification and labelling according to UN GHS (Category 2 or Category 1). As indicated above this prediction is based on the experimental result for the analogue substance Lithium perchlorate. In comparison closely related perchlorates like Potassium, Sodium and Ammonium perchlorate are neither classified as skin irrit. 1 nor as skin irrit. 2 in accordance with Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).
