Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

There are no data for the toxicity of lithium isooctadecanoate to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria but testing on lithium isooctadecanoate for toxicity to algal growth is currently ongoing.

Lithium 12-hydroxystearate showed no effects at up to 100 mg/L WAF in an algal growth inhibition study, with the 72 hour ErL50 determined to be > 100 mg/L WAF and the 72 hour NOErLR is 100 mg/L WAF, and these results have been read across to lithium isooctadecanoate.

Additional information

There are no data for the toxicity of lithium isooctadecanoate to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria but testing on lithium isooctadecanoate for toxicity to algal growth is currently ongoing.

Data are read across from lithium 12-hydroxystearate as both substances are lithium salts of carboxylic acids, lithium isooctadecanoate with a methyl branch on the acid chain and lithium 12-hydroxystearate with a hydroxyl group. See IUCLID section 13 for read across justification.

The toxicity of lithium 12-hydroxystearate to algal growth was determined in a GLP-compliant, static, freshwater test (Harlan 2013), following OECD guideline 201. Lithium 12-hydroxystearate was tested at concentrations of 1, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L WAF alongside a blank control and no effects were observed at any concentrations. Algae were exposed to water accommodated fractions of lithium 12-hydroxystearate for 72 hours in standard ecotoxicity media adjusted to a hardness of approximately 150 mg/L CaCO3. Observations of algal biomass were made in triplicate at 24, 48 and 72 hours and the test solutions analysed for lithium content and total organic carbon at test initiation and termination.

Lithium 12-hydroxysterate has a 72 hour ErL50 of >100 mg/L WAF and 72 hour NOErLR of at least 100 mg/L WAF to algae. As lithium 12-hydroxystearate is not toxic to algae, it can be justifiably expected that lithium isooctadecanoate will not be toxic to algae either.
