Description of key information

2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is a liquid as marketed (50 % in isododecane) with a measured mp of -15 oC and supported by literature noting that the neat substance (which is not stable) is a liquid as well.

The boiling point of 2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is waived due to decomposition.

The relative density of di-tert-butyl sec-butylidene diperoxide, 50% solution in isododecane at 20°C is 0.8114. Note that the organic peroxide cannot be handled safely in pure form.

The vapor pressure of the contained 2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is calculated as 50 Pa @ 25 oC.

The partition coefficient log Pow value for 2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane as determined experimentally is 5.4.

The water solubility of 2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is 8.3 mg/L at 20 °C.

The flash point of 2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane as marketed (50 % in isododecane) is 43 oC, consistent with that reported for the isododecane (45 oC).

2,2-di(tert-butylperoxy)butane is classified as an Organic Peroxide Type C as marketed (50 % in isododecane). The substance has no explosive and no oxidising properties.

The Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) of the substances is 70 °C (reference SADT: CLP regulations 2.15.2.3 and UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition, sub-sections 28.1, 28.2, 28.3 and Table 28.3.).
