Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance belongs to a group of Natural Complex Substances (NCS) : UVCB sub-type 3, where the source is biological and the process is refinement (See ECHA Guidance on Identification and naming of substances under REACH); such as: exudates, resinoids and concretes that are well-known to be very difficult to analytically assess. These complex UVCB substances contain a large number of constituents with different volatility and solubility (mostly low solubility); the composition can be widely unknown and being (mostly) solid(ish) and/or extremely viscous resins their physical state leads to further difficulties for testing.

Based on the very complex nature of the test item (pasty UVCB substance, 80 -99% of unknnown constituents) leading to technical issues to analyse this kind of substances,physico-chemical properties of the registered substance were determined from experimental testing when possible. However, some endpoints were waived, based on the experience in handling and use of the substance and on the chemical structure of the known constituents or based on technical issues when standard methods were considered as more suitable for pure substances than for complex substances, specially when the information obtained from testing was not relevant or of practical use and irrelevant for subsequent assessments.

The substance is a brown to brown red paste (very viscous and sticky liquid) at ambient temperature. It is expected to sink into the water, because of its relative density is considered as 1.0447. No hazard was identified with regard to physical properties (flammability, explosivity, oxidising properties, self-heating substance, self-reactive substance) based on Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and GHS criteria.

Additional information

Summary of relevant physico-chemical properties:

Endpoint (method)

Data

Appearance at 20 °C and 1 atm. (visual)

Brown-brown red paste, very viscous and sticky, almost not flowable liquid

Melting/Freezing point

(OECD 102/EU A1, pre-test results and DSC method)

Melting point < 5.1°C (278.3 K)

Boiling point

(OECD 103/EU A2, Siwoloboff)

No initial boiling point was determined and signs of potential decomposition of the substance were observed during the test.

Relative density

(OECD 109/EU A3, pycnometer method)

1.0447 ± 0.0002 g/cm3 at 20.0 ± 0.2 °C

D20/4 = 1.0447

Granulometry

(data waiving)

Study scientifically not necessary (not granular / powder)

Vapour pressure

(OECD 104/EU A4,

static method)

712 Pa at 20 °C and 870 Pa at 25 °C (interpolation)

Note that the result obtained on this kind of substance should be largely influence by small amounts of volatile constituents and these values don't represent the major part of the substance. Therefore the result should be considered with caution when used for subsequent assessment (worst case).

log Kow

(data waiving)

Waived based on technical issue and poor knownledge of the composition of the substance.

Water solubility

(data waiving)

Waived considering the very complex nature of the test item, the information obtained from testing is considered as not relevant or of practical use for subsequent assessments

Surface tension

(waiving, not intended to use)

Waived based considering that surface activity is not the intended use of the substance (i.e. not a desired property).

Auto-ignition temperature

(EU A15 / DIN 51794)

355°C (986.4 -1003.6 hPa)

relative self-ignition (for solids) waived based on MP<160°C

Flash-point

(EU A9, ISO 3679

equilibrium closed cup)

Flammability (N.1 readily combustible solids)

Flammability water&air

(data waiving)

Self-heating substances/mixtures (data waiving)

149°C at 1013 hPa => NOT Classified under Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP) and GHS

No ignition was observed when the substance was heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes.

NOT flammable solid (for CLP and UN regulations).

Waived based on experience in handling, testing and use and chemical structure of known constituents.

NOT flammable if contact with air or water

Waived based on the physical state and low melting point (<160°C).

No self-heating substance anticipated.

Explosive properties

(DSC screening test)

No potential for explosive properties.

Note also: NO classification for self-reactive substance.

Oxidising properties

(data waiving)

Waived based on technical issue and chemical structure of known constituents.

Low potential for oxidizing properties

Slight variations are possible with composition (UVCB substance).
