6.1.1 Short-term Toxicity to Fish

The short term toxicity of the read-across substance Zinc Hydroxystannate to Salmo gairdneri (new name Oncorhynchus mykiss) was investigated in a 96 hour semi-static test conducted in accordance with GLP and the standardised guidelines OECD Guideline No 203 and EEC Directive 67/548 Annex V C.1 as published in 84/449/EEC.

0.10 mg/L was the highest test concentration that could be prepared due to the limited water solubility of the test material and having regard to the limitations on the amount of auxiliary solvent permitted in the test (100 µL/L of 1 % Tween -80 in acetone).

An LD50 of >0.10 mg/L was found under the conditions of this study.

6.1.2 Long-term Toxicity to Fish

In accordance with Section 9.1.6, Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, it is considered appropriate to omit the long term aquatic toxicity testing on fish as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I has not indicated a need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.

6.1.3 Short-term Toxicity to Aquatic Invertebrates

The short term toxicity of the read-across substance Zinc Hydroxystannate to Daphnia magna was investigated in a 48 hour static test conducted in accordance with GLP and the standardised guidelines OECD Guideline No. 202, Part 1 and EEC Directive 67/548 Annex V C.2 as published in 84/449/EEC.

0.10 mg/L was the highest test concentration that could be prepared due to the limited water solubility of the test material and having regard to the limitations on the amount of auxiliary solvent permitted in the test (100 µL/L of 1 % Tween -80 in acetone).

A 48 h NOEC of >0.10 mg/L was found under the conditions of this study. 

6.1.4 Long-term Toxicity to Aquatic Invertebrates

In accordance with Section 9.1.5, Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, it is considered appropriate to omit the long term aquatic toxicity testing on invertebrates as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I has not indicated a need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.

6.1.5 Toxicity to Aquatic Algae and Cyanobacteria

In accordance with Section 9.1.2, Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, it is considered appropriate to omit the growth inhibition study on aquatic plants as it is considered that there are mitigating factors indicating that exposure to the aquatic environment is unlikely to occur, in particular the highly insoluble nature of the substance.

6.1.7 Toxicity to Microorganisms

The short term toxicity of the read-across substance Zinc Hydroxystannate to activated sludge in a respiration inhibition test was investigated in accordance with GLP and the standardised guidelines OECD Guideline No 209 and EEC Official Journal L133 (30 May 1988).

An EC50 3 h of >1000 mg/L was found under the conditions of this study. It was considered unrealistic and unnecessary to test at concentrations in excess of 1000 mg/L. However, due to the low water solubility of the test material, the test vessels contained a fine dispersion of the test material in water and not a true solution.
