Description of key information
Additional information
Short-term toxicity of quinidine to fish:
In the ECOTOX Database, the toxicity of quinidine sulphate to Anguilla anguilla is is given. The LC0 (24 h) of quinidine sulphate is 30 mg/L. According to this, the LC0 (24 h) of quinidine is 23.04 mg/L.
Short-term toxicity of quinidine to invertebrates:
In this publication of Calleja, 1994 the EC50 of quinidine sulphate for Daphnia magna as well as LC50 for Brachionus calyciflorus and Streptocephalus proboscideus were determined in fresh water for 24 h according to OECD guideline. The EC50 of quinidine sulphate for Daphnia magna is 33.67 mg/l. According to this, the EC50 of quinidine is 25.85 mg/L. The LC50 of quinidine sulphate for Brachionus calyciflorus is 4.90 mg/l and the LC50 for Streptocephalus proboscideus is 4.64 mg/l. According to this, the LC50 of quinidine for Brachionus calyciflorus is 3.76 mg/L and the LC50 for Streptocephalus proboscideus is 3.56 mg/l. Furthermore, in the publication of Lilius, 1994 the EC50 of the read across substance quinidine sulphate for Daphnia magna (Age < 24 h) was determined according to OECD guideline in freshwater for 24 h. The EC50 for Daphnia magna is 44.81 mg/L (0.06 mM). According to this, the EC50 of quinidine is 34.4 mg/L. The LC50 of the read across substance quinidine sulphate for Artemia salina was determined in saltwater for 24 h. The LC50 of quinidine sulphate for Artemia salina is 154.63 mg/l. According to this, the LC50 of quinidine is 118.73 mg/L. Additionally in an own study, the EC50 of the read-across substance quinidine sulphate was determined for Daphnia magna in fresh water for 48 h. The EC50 of quinidine sulphate is 46.7 mg/L. According to this, the EC50 of quinidine is 40.57 mg/l.
Short-term toxicity of quinidine to algae:
The toxicity to cyanobacterium Arthrospira maxima was determined with a quantum efficiency test. The IC50 is between 200 µM and 400 µM quinidine. At a concentration of 400 µM (129.77 mg/L) the maximal effect was obtained and the quantum efficiency is close to 0. At a concentration of 200 µM quinidine the quantum use efficiency is reduced but still above 50% of the control. Thus, the IC50 is > 200 µM (64.88 mg/L). The effect was determined over time. For 200 µM quinidine the maximal effect was observed after 6 hours exposure.
Toxicity of quinidine to aquatic plants:
In the publication of Wink, 1992 the toxicity of quinidine to Lemna gibba was determined for 6 days. At a concentration of 0.4% quinidine lead to bleaching. At a concentration of 0.04 % no effects were observed.
Toxicity of quinidine to microorganisms:
In the study published by Wink, 1998 the bacterial growth inhibition of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens was determined. The IC100 of quinidine of all three Bacteria species is 3 mM (973.25 mg/L). Quinidine has antibacterial activity.
