Description of key information

Short term toxicity to fish:

The acute toxicity of Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester monohydrochloride (L.A.E) to danio rerio was measured according to OECD 203 and EU method C.1. Under experimental conditions, the 96-hour LC50 of L.A.E in a flow-through test system was estimated as 8.36 mg/L based on measured concentrations.

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

The acute toxicity of Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester monohydrochloride (L.A.E) to Daphnia magna was performed according to OECD 202 and EU method C2. The 48 hour EC50 of dehydrated L.A.E. for the immobilisation of Daphnia magna was 6.54 (95% confidence limits of 4.00 and 8.98 mg/L).

Toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria:

The Algal growth test for Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester monohydrochloride (L.A.E) was performed according to OECD 201 and EU method C.3. After 72 hours of exposure to dehydrated LAE, the NOEC was 0.243 mg/L and EC50 (growth rate ) 0.723 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The effect of Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester monohydrochloride (L.A.E) on the respiration rate of activated sludge was assessed by the methods detailed in EC Directive 88/302, 'Biodegradation - Activation Sludge Respiration Inhibition test' and OECD Test Guideline 209, ' Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition test' adopted 4 April 1984.The EC50 of Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl e

ster monohydrochloride was calculated to be 98.5 mg/l (95% confidence limits 86.6 -112.9 mg/l) and the NOEC concentration was estimated to be less than 30 mg/l.

After the assessment, the test material was considered to be toxic to aquatic organisms (Category Acute 1 and Category Chronic 3).
