Aquatic toxicity

The available reliable ecotoxicity results selected for the effect of the test substance on aquatic organisms are all based on nominal dissolved test item concentrations at test start. Studies were performed with and without pH adjustment at a test item concentration of 100 mg/L. Hence, the following tables represent test results (i) with pH adjustment and (ii) without pH adjustment:

Reliable short-term toxicity data for freshwater organisms are available for two trophic levels: aquatic invertebrates and algae. The lowest acute effect value was the 48-h EC50of 76.6 mg/L observed for the effect of the test item on growth inhibition ofPseudokirchnerella subcapitata.

Reliable long-term toxicity data for freshwater organisms are available for one trophic level: algae. The chronic effect value for algae was a 72-h EC10of 53.5 mg/L observed for the effect of the test item on growth rate ofPseudokirchneriella subcapitata.

All results based on nominal test item concentrations.

Based on the results represented above, the observed effects are assumed to be pH-related and are not assumed to be toxic effects of 4,4‘-Sulfonyldiphthalic acid dianhydride (DSDA). The absence of observed toxic effects at 100 mg/L in pH adjusted solutions indicates the lack of a hazardous potential since the pH of aquatic systems is typically well buffered.
