In the key study, a MITI I test by CERI (1998; OECD 301 C) 88 % biodegradation were achieved by 28d and as soon as 7 days after test start 85% had already been mineralized (BOD/ThOD). Complete primary biodegradation (by GC) was shown by 7 days. In another study (Thiebaud 1995) using the stringent CBT design of OECD 301 D. 66 % degradation by BOD were observed by day 7 and 76 % at 28 days.

Other studies showed lower ultimate levels of biodegradation but also indications of loss of test material during the test. In a study according to Zahn Wellens method (OECD 302 B, inherent biodegradability) it is shown that aeration of activated sludge result in rapid stripping of the substance from the medium. This data shows that in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant n-butyl methacrylate stripping will play a major role besides metabolism.

The substance being readily biodegradable, waivers have been prepared for higher level tests.
