Studies on fish, daphnia and algae using excess loadings of CS (calcium silicate) showed no substancial acute toxicity; slightly elevated mortality was found in a fish test directly using suspended test material as well as a weak inhibitory effect of CS on green alga.
Test results for calcium silicate, based on loading rates, are as follows:
Fish:
96h-LL50(Oncorhynchus mykiss) >1000 mg/L (highest loading tested)
Daphnia:
48h-EL50 (Daphnia magna) >10,000 mg/L
Alga:
72h-ErL50(Scenedesmus subspicatus) >1000 mg/L
The 72h-EL10 was <100 mg/L
The inhibitory effects are supposed to be caused by metal ions of CS.
There are no chronic aquatic toxicity data (except algae). Due to the known inherent physico-chemical properties, the absence of substantial acute toxic effects as well as the ubiquitous presence of silica/silicates in the environment, there is no alert for harmful effects to arise from long-term exposure to synthetic amorphous calcium silicate.
