Additional information

Three studies are available for bis(ethylhexyl) maleate, assessing the acute toxicity of the substance to fish. The first study was conducted according to OECD 203 using zebra fish as test organism. The exposure period was 96 hours under semi-static conditions, and the test substance concentration was analytically determined after 24 hours. Here, the recovery of the test substance was very low. However, as water accommodated fractions were tested, the EC50 was based on nominal values, resulting in an 96 -hour values of >100 mg/L. Two studies were conducted under static conditions according to the German national DIN standard 38 412, using Golden orfe as test organism. Both tests are limited to an exposure period of only 48 hours, which is too short in comparison to currently valid standards. Furthermore, today Golden orfe is not the standard test organism anymore, as it is a seasonal animal, which leads to higher variations of the test results as in tests conducted with non-seasonal fish like zebra fish. Therefore, the study according to OECD was regarded as the most reliable one and selected as the key study, although the results of both tests with Golden orfe were lower than the one with Zebra fish.
