Description of key information

No acute daphnia toxicity studies have been performed using C12 -16 amine oxide. Data are read across from C12-14 and C12-18 AO on the basis of the equivalence in chemical structure, large overlap in chain length distributions between the substances and expected similarities in physico-chemical properties. The EC50 (48 h) for Daphnia magna is 2.4 mg AO/L, based on the lowest EC50 derived from the reliable studies available for C12-14 and C12-18 AO.

Two reliable studies are available for C12-18 AO. In the key study, performed according to OECD TG 202 under GLP [Noack M (2001b)] Daphnia magna were exposed to C12-18 AO under static conditions for 48 hours at nominal concentrations of 0.75, 1.5, 3, 6, 12 and 24 mg AO/L. The EC50 (48 h) was 2.4 mg AO/L. In the supporting study also performed to OECD TG 202 under static conditions using Daphnia magna, the EC50 (48 h) was 4.5 mg AO/L.

Three reliable studies performed using Daphnia magna are available for C12-14 AO. All three studies were performed to OECD TG 202 under static conditions. The EC50 (48h) values (nominal) obtained were 3.1 mg AO/L [Noack M (2001a)], 2.9 mg AO/L [Mark U & Meuwsen IJB (1990b)] and 4.2 mg AO/L [Beneventi S (2005)].
