Executive summary:

The purpose of this study was the determination of relative density of the test item according to the consolidated version of Council Directive67/548/EEC Annex V (Council Directive 92/69/EEC),Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties, A.3. Density of liquids and solids and OECD test guideline OECD 109 (1995)Density of liquids and solids.The study was performed in accordance with the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and reported with a valid GLP certificate.

 

The density of a solid in any form can be measured at ambient temperature (R) with the gas comparison pycnometer. Before the measurement the apparatus with test item was swept with 19.5 psi Helium for 10 times. Thereby a certain amount of gas (Helium, purity min. 99.99 %) was expanded from the volume with the test item (V1=36.31cm3)into an additional volume (V2=20.84cm3). From the pressure drop from p1 to p2 the volume of the test item can be calculated. For the calculation of density a mass measurement was taken before performing the volume measurement.
