Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

For testing the skin sensitisation of the quinine sulphate, five patients were tested with a standard patch test. All five patients reacted to a 2% solution of quinine sulphate and became sensitized after short exposure time. Also in the case report of Hardie, 1978 one patients was tested with a patch test. The patch test was strongly positive at 48 h to 1% aqueous solution of quinine sulphate. Quinine sulphate is obviously a contact allergen.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Quinine sulphate is a potent contact sensitizer.

Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
Endpoint selection: 7.10.4
Skin sensitisation was shown in a human case report.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Justification for classification or non-classification

Quinine sulphate is obviously a contact allergen. Based on the results quinine bisulphate has to be classified category 1A.
