Terrestrial toxicity:

 

Tests for the terrestrial compartment are not available for Amines, tri-C8-10-alkyl.

 

To evaluate possible effects for the terrestrial compartment, endpoints like chronic toxicity towards earthworm, plants and micro-organisms will be covered by read across to the substance1-Hexanamine, 2-ethyl-N,N-bis(2-ethylhexyl) (CAS: 1860-26 -0.

 

Toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods:

The endpoint is evaluated by read across: The key study is an OECD 222 GLP-test performed by BASF SE (2013) with the earthworm Eisenia fetida. The 28 -d LC50 for the adult earthworms was determined to be >1000 mg/kg soil dw. The 56 -d EC10 for reproduction was also determined to be >1000 mg/kg soil dw. Therefore, no risk for macroorganisms is anticipated by the substance. (BASF, 2013c)

 

Toxicity to terrestrial plants:

The toxicity of 1-Hexanamine, 2-ethyl-N,N-bis(2-ethylhexyl)- (CAS 1860-26-0) to terrestrial plants was investigated in two consecutive studies according to OECD 208, considering the effect parameters shoot length and dry weight for the determination of effect values.

 

The former OECD 208 guideline study (BASF, 2014b) was performed according to GLP with 6 different species (Avena sativa, Brassica Napus, Triticum aestivum, Glycine max, Lycopersicon esculentum & Fagopyrum esculentum). However, due to calculation problems with the data structure in ToxRat, some endpoints could only be estimated in this study by an expert judgment. Therefore, the critical endpoints have been re-evaluated for the species Avena sativa, Brassica Napus & Triticum aestivum in the subsequent OECD 208 guideline study (BASF, 2014c).

 

For evaluation, both studies will be assessed in a weight-of-evidence approach. The gathered data from both studies are considered equivalent to data from a long-term study as the former study was conducted with 6 different species. Therefore the assessment of toxicity is based on the NOEC values determined in both studies on the basis of shoot length and dry weight.

Toxicity to soil microorganisms:

In a study according to OECD 216 (soil microorganisms - nitrogen transformation test) the EC10 was determined to be 1000 mg/kg dw after 28 days; the EC25 and EC50 values were determined to be >1000mg/kg dw at the end of exposure. The nitrate amounts determined in the test assay without Luzerne meal on day 28 show a significant increase (compared with the same test assay of day 0).

 

Because the degree of inhibition at 1000 mg/kg Dw was less than 25 % at the end of the exposure, Tris-(2-ethylhexyl)amine can be evaluated as having no long-term influence on nitrogen transformation in soils. (BASF, 2014d)
