Description of key information
Data from skin irritation study performed on 'benzene, ethylenated by-products from' indicate skin irritating potential. No eye irritation was seen with 'benzene, ethylenated by-products from'. Skin and Eye irritation studies conducted using 1,1-diphenylethane, the main component of 'benzene, ethyleneted by-products from' showed no eye and skin irritation.

Data from 1985 skin irritation study performed on the complex UVCB mixture of 'benzene, ethylenated by-products from' indicate skin irritating potential. The Dow 1987 study conducted using DPE 75 (distillate with 75% concentration of 1,1 diphenylethane) indicates a mild irritant reaction that does not quite meet the cut off for classification. The additional data on the major component,
1,1 diphenylethane based on the 1984 study, support conclusion of minimal to no irritation. In a study with flux oil (a representative sample of benzene, ethylenated byproducts from), there was a stronger irritation reaction that does warrant classification. Even though the reporting of this study is minimal, there is sufficient information to come to a conclusion on the endpoint. Considering the whole dataset, it is appropriate to classify 'benzene, ethylenated by-products from' for skin irritation.
With respect to eye irritation, the available data on the substance and on a major constituent (1,1 -diphenylethane) do not support the need to classify for eye irritation.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Skin irritation:
Whilst there was some difference in the irritation potential in the substances tested, overall it appears that the 'benzene, ethylenated by-products from' material is likely a skin irritant. However, the irritancy did subside and complete recovery was seen in the observation period and so this substance is not a severe irritant and should therefore be classified as Category 2 Skin irritant according to GHS.
Eye irritation:
No classifcation for the eye irritation endpoint is warrented.
