Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation:
TOC removal
Details on study design:
A solution of 100 mg/L 3-chloroaniline in a mineral medium was stirred in a closed flask (300 mL) and inoculated at a constant temperature (25 ± 1 °C) for up to 28 days under aerobic conditions in the dark.
The endogenous activity of the inoculum was checked running parallel blanks with inoculum but without 3-chloroaniline. A reference compound (aniline) was run in parallel to check the operation of the procedures.
A toxicity control (3-chloroaniline and reference compound) was run parallel, to ensure that the chosen concentration of 3-chloroaniline was not inhibitory to microorganisms.
Degradation was followed by the determination of oxygen uptake and measurement were taken at frequent intervals to allow the identification of the beginning and end of biodegradation.
The oxygen uptake was calculated from the readings taken at regular frequent intervals, using the method given by the manufacturer of the equipment. At the beginning and the end of incubatio, the pH was measured in the flasks.
