Description of key information
As degradation is a very important process that influences the environmental fate and the relevant hazards of the substance Dried Sludge from Domestic Wastewater was assessed for its degradation potential according to OECD 301. Based on the results, the test item was concluded as readily biodegradable since, degradation of test item reached >60% degradation in 10-day window period and also test item is not inhibitory since, the degradation of toxicity control is >25% ThCO2 at 14th day within 28 day test period.
A measured volume of the inoculated mineral medium, containing a known concentration of the test item [10-20 mg total organic carbon (TOC) per liter] as the nominal sole source of organic carbon was aerated by the passage of carbon dioxide-free air at a controlled rate in the dark. The inoculum was secondary effluent, sourced from a treatment plant receiving predominantly domestic sewage. Degradation was followed over 28 days by determining the carbon dioxide produced. The carbon dioxide was trapped in barium hydroxide and was measured by titration of the residual hydroxide or as inorganic carbon. The amount of carbon dioxide produced from the test item (corrected for that derived from the blank inoculum) was expressed as a percentage of theoretical carbon dioxide (ThCO2).
The mean per cent degradation of test item was 97.77 % at the end of test. The percent degradation of reference item was 98.71 % and the toxicity control was 96.0 % at the end of the test. This shows the test item is not inhibitory to the test system
As long as the substance is readily biodegradable, no further investigation of the biodegradability of the substance, or of the possible environmental effects of transformation products, is required.
