Additional information

Acetaldehyde is a colourless, clear liquid with a pungent, suffocating odour. Acetaldehyde is an extremely flammable liquid and vapour when exposed to heat or flame and is explosive. Acetaldehyde reacts violently with acid anhydrides, alcohols, ketones, phenols, NH3, HCN, H2S, P, halogens, isocyanates, strong alkalis and amines. It is completely miscible in water and most common organic solvents.

The relative molecular mass of Acetaldehyde is 44.05 g/mol. Its freezing point is -123.5°C and its boiling point is 20.2°C at 101.3 kPa. The octanol/water partition coefficient has been determined to be log Pow = 0.63. Its vapour pressure at 25°C is 120.2 kPa. The relative vapour density is 1.52. The measured density at 18°C is 0.785 g/cm3.

The flash point was determined to be -38.89°C, in a closed cup and -40°C using the open cup method. The autoignition temperature is 175 °C. The explosion limits of mixtures with air are between 4 and 57 vol % acetaldehyde.

According to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, acetaldehyde is classified as Flammable Liquid; Category 1 with Hazard Statement H224: Extremely flammable liquid and vapour.
