Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- water solubility
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- weight of evidence
- Study period:
- 1999
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- data from handbook or collection of data
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: no guideline available (Handbook data)
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Remarks:
- Reaction with water is vigorous, and with large amounts of peroxide it may be explosive.
- Details on results:
- Contact of the peroxide with combustibles and traces of water may cause ignition. Violent explosions on two occasions during attempted preparation of
oxygen were attributed to traces of sodium in the peroxide. The former would liberate hydrogen and ignite the detonable mixture. - Conclusions:
- Reaction with water is vigorous, and with large amounts of peroxide it may be explosive. The study must be waived.

- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- data from handbook or collection of data
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: no guideline available (Handbook data)
- Remarks on result:
- other: Freely soluble in water, forming sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide, the latter quickly decomposes into oxygen and water.
- Conclusions:
- The substance is freely soluble in water, forming sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide, the latter quickly decomposes into oxygen and water.

Description of key information
Daily manipulation of the substance by the producer indicates the production of oxygen and sodium hydroxide. Testing is not required.
For the purpose of the risk assessment, the NaOH solubility is referenced as key value and the REACH dossier value is used (100g/100g H2O at 25°C).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Water solubility:
- 1 000 g/L
- at the temperature of:
- 25 °C
