Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the chemical structure and the list of reactive groups that could have explosive properties (e.g. continuos nitrogen atoms) in Brethericks Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards, Butterworths, 4th edition, it cannot be excluded that the substance Direct Red 254 TEA salt has explosive properties.

The determination of the thermal stability of the test substance by DSC-HP (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) showed an exothermic phenomenon from 197°C with a peak at 208°C and an associated heat of 362.9 kJ/kg which could be attributed to the thermal decomposition of the sample. This value is therefore below the limit of 500 kJ/kg needed for exclusion given in the Regulation and classify the substance as non-explosive.
