Description of key information
Assessment based on the available physico-chemical and toxicological data
Absorption
The substance is dissociated at the pH of the stomach and intestine, and its high polarity, charge and complexing properties suggests that it would be absorbed only sparingly from the gastrointestinal tract. It also has a high water solubility (> 500 g/L) and low octanol/water partition coefficient (-3.0 log10Pow), properties that are not conducive to percutaneous absorption. The low acute oral and dermal toxicities of the substance supports its predicted low oral and percutaneous absorption.
The substance elicits sub-acute, systemic and developmental oral toxicity. However, these effects are considered secondary to the sequestration of essential metal ions in the gastrointestinal tract and not to be indicative of systemic toxicity per se.
The low vapour pressure (2.6 x 10-4Pa at 25 °C) precludes inhalation of the substance. It is not manufactured or used in powder form.
Distribution and metabolism
The lipophobic properties of the substance indictates that it would have limited distribution to the major organs and tissues and that it would not bioaccumulate. There is no information on metabolism, but it would seem likely that it conjugates with glutathione.
Excretion
The poor absorption of the substance in the gastrointestinal tract would predicate the vast majority of orally ingested material being excreted in the faeces. The high water solubility of the substance would also suggest that any absorbed material would be rapidly eliminated via the kidney.
