Additional information

No studies investigating the short-term toxicity of Decyl 2-ethylhexanoate (CAS 93777-46-9) to freshwater fish are available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substances Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2) and Hexanoic acid, 2-ethyl-, C16-18 alkyl esters (CAS 90411-68-0) is applied.

Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substances, the source substances are considered suitable representatives for the evaluation of the short-term toxicity of the target substance to fish. The read-across approach is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID section 13.

The first study investigated the acute toxicity effects of the source substance Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2) to freshwater fish according to EU Method C.1. Danio rerio was exposed to the nominal test item concentrations of 1000, 3000 and 10000 mg/L under semi-static conditions. There were no toxic or sub-lethal effects at any concentration after an incubation period of 96 h observed, resulting in a LC50 (96 h) of >10000 mg/L (nominal). Analytically, concentrations above the limit of water solubility were determined (e.g. 15.8 and 6.1 mg/L from the 3000 mg/L sample).

The second study investigated the short-term toxicity of the source substance Hexanoic acid, 2-ethyl-, C16-18 alkyl esters (CAS 90411-68-0) to freshwater fish. The non-GLP study was conducted under static conditions according to OECD 203 using Danio rerio as test organism (Bouillon, 2012). A 100 mg/L loading rate WAF was tested in a limit test. No mortality was observed in the treatment and the control throughout the test period of 96 h. Hence, a LL50 (96 h) is determined to be > 100 mg/L based on the nominal loading rate.

Based on the available results from structurally related source substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that Decyl 2-ethylhexanoate (CAS 93777-46-9) will not exhibit short-term effects to fish up to the limit of water solubility.
