Results and discussion

Any other information on results incl. tables

Most common symptoms are listed in table 1. In addition for those working in the exposure area physical examination showed tremor, ataxia and diplopia. Clinical chemistry showed some subjects with occult blood, bile and/or glucose in the urine and 10 with blood chemistry indicative of liver function abnormalities. Some hospitalised crew also had evidence of myocardial and peripheral muscle injury.

Was one fatality (2 year old child) ; autopsy results showed pulmonary oedema with desquamation of respiratory epithelium, pleural effusion and myocardial necrosis.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

Exposure to phosphine in the confined quarters above and near a ship grain store resulted in a number of clinical signs in the crew and the death of one child. After exposure, changes to liver function and the heart were still apparent.
