Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a test on flammability in contact with water according to the UN guideline, the maximum rate of evolution of flammable gases from ferrosilicon was found to vary from 0.03 l/kg/h to 0.37 l/kg/h. In a test of flammability, according to EU Method A.16, one sample smouldered, but no flame propagation was noted. The smouldering stopped shortly after the burner was removed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The maximum evolution rate of flammable gases from different grades of ferrosilicon did not fulfil the classification criteria for "substances and mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases" given in the CLP regulation (maximum evolution rate ≥ 1 l/kg h).

The smouldering (no flame propagation) observed in the flammability test does not entitle classification of ferrosilicon as a "flammable solid" according to CLP regulation.
