Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Nutmeg Oil is a Natural Complex Substance, a mixture consisting of slightly soluble to soluble constituents. The volume is 1-10 tonnes/year, therefore no PNEC is derived and no Hazard assessment is conducted.

Conclusion on classification

For Nutmeg oil, key studies on the aquatic toxicity are available for both Daphnia and algae. The aquatic toxicity for Daphnia and algae was determined in tests with Water Accomodated Fractions and resulted in a 48h-EL50 of 4.2 mg/L and a 48h-EL50 of 15 mg/L respectively.

Nutmeg oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which > 90% of the constituents is identified. The constituents, comprising 94% of the composition of this NCS, are in the category of ready biodegradable substances. Therefore, Nutmeg oil is considered readily biodegradable.

The log Kow range for Nutmeg oil constituents was found to be 2.65 – 4.88. In the typical Nutmeg oil, for 94% of the constituents log Kow is >3, for 75% of the constituents log Kow is >4.

Based on the above data for acute toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow), according to Directive 67/548/EEC Nutmeg oil is classified as R51/53 (Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment).

According to Regulation 1272/2008/EC (CLP) Nutmeg oil is classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment, Chronic Category 2 (H411).
