Additional information
Study results available from acute toxicity testing in fish, Daphnia and algae are considered to be unsuitable to derive PNECs for freshwater, marine water, sediment and soil.
Due to the lack of environmental release of the substance from use, it is not possible to calculate a reasonable predicted environmental concentration (PEC). Therefore, it is considered that a PEC/PNEC comparison would not give meaningful results and would not accurately assess the substances environmental concern.
However, the available study results indicate that the substance does not show toxic effects at its limit of water solubility to fish, Daphnia or algae. Hence in the event of unintentional release to the aquatic environment, the risk to the environment is considered to be low.
Conclusion on classification
Acute toxicity study results are available in fish, Daphnia and algae.
Fish:
Two studies were acute fish toxicity studies have been conducted.
In one study (Ellenberg W & Rielly PD (1999)) the test substance showed some acute toxicity at the limit of water solubility, however this may have been caused by low oxygen levels.
In the other study (Liu H (1998)) the test substance showed no toxicity at the limit of water solubility in the study.
Daphnia:
The substance was not acutely toxic to Daphnia magna at the limit of its water solubility in this study.
Algal:
The substance was not acutely toxic to Selenastrum capricornutum at the limit of its water solubility in this study.
However, as the substance is not classed as readily biodegradable, has a very low water solubility (<5μg/l) and has a partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of log Pow >6, the following environmental classification applies to the substance:
DSD (67/548/EEC): R53 - may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment
CLP (EC No 1907/2006): Aquatic chronic 4 - H413: May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life.
