Description of key information

According to REACH Annex IX and X, point 9.4, toxicity testing in terrestrial organisms shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on soil organisms. Lactic acid is readily biodegradable (see 5.2.1) and is a ubiquitous and essential molecule of life. It will not adsorb to soil (see 5.4.1). As such there is no relevance in the hazard assessment for terrestrial organisms.

In the available studies with honey bees and birds, no effects were measured up to the highest concentration.
