Description of key information

The only available data with DETU on humans are sensitisation data.
DETU is a skin sensitizer and several cases of allergic contact dermatitis were observed and described in publications.
The most interessant publication is this of Liippo (2010) because it's a more recent publication and 15 100 patients were analyzed.

Human sensitisation

Thioureas are widely used accelerators in the manufacture of synthetic rubber products. Allergic contact dermatitis because of thiourea sensitization from orthopaedic joint braces, protective clothing, swim suits, and various sports equipment has benn reported.

Because the occurrence of rubber products containing thioureas may be common today, a mixture of three thiourea chemicals was added to the Finnish patch test baseline series in 2002 (Liippo 2010). Also, the authors have analyzed the occurrence of positive patch test reactions to thiourea chemicals and sources of sensitization among Finnish general dermatology patients with suspected contact allergy during a 6 -year period. Thiourea mix yielded positive patch test reactions in 59 of 15100 patients (0.39%). Diethylthiourea was positive in 24/33 patients tested with individual rubber chemicals.

A more recent publication (Dall ABH et al. 2012) evaluated the occurrence of sensitisation to DETU during a 19 -year period using data from the Allergen Bank database at the Department of Dermatology and Allergy Center (Odense University Hospital). PA total of 239 patients were patch tested with DETU 1% in petrolatum obtained from the Allergen Bank. One hundred and fifty-one patients were tested by 27 different dermatologists in private practice, and positive reactions were found in 16% (24/151) of the patients. Eighty-eight patients were tested at the dermatology department and positive reactions were found in 15% (13/88). Thus, 15% (37/239) had positive patch test reactions to DETU, all with current clinical relevance and all strong. DETU 1% pet is a contact allergen giving a high yield of strongly positive clinically relevant patch test reactions following targeted testing in patients with a history of neoprene rubber dermatitis.
