Additional information

Two supporting studies were identified for dimethyl sulphide, a structural analogue of diethyl sulphide.

Following single acute exposure of mice to atmospheres of dimethyl sulphide vapors from 6.8% to 50.6% (w/v), dimethyl sulphide was distributed in all tissues almost equally, except for the lungs where the concentration was much lower. In addition, JECFA stated that simple alkyl sulphides (including dimethyl sulphide) are oxidised (by enzymes from the cytochrome P450 superfamily and flavin-containing monooxygenases) to sulfoxides, and subsequently to sulfones in mammals. These are the major urinary metabolites of simple alkyl sulphides (Terazawa et al., 1991).

The subcutaneous injection of dimethyl sulphide to a rabbit leads to the excretion of dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone in the urine and to the expiration of a malodorous material (presumably dimethyl sulphide) (Williams et al., 1966).
