Description of key information

3 Zahn Wellens-test with dimethyl maleate showed >90 to ca. 100 % biodegradation within (in 2 tests) 8 to 10 days.
A read across was performed to the result of a Carbon Dioxide Evolution Test for Ready Biodegradability with diethyl maleate (CAS 141-05-9), a structural analogue of dimethyl maleate, which is readily biodegradable.
Taking into account the fast and rather complete degradation in the Zahn-Wellens tests and the readily biodegradability of an analogue compound, it is considered that dimethyl maleate is readily biodegradable.

Readily Biodegradability:

Three different tests on inherent biodegradability of dimethyl maleate are available. In all three tests an almost complete degradation was observed and in the tests of 1980 and 1977 this complete degradation occurred within 10 days. Taking into account these data and the fact that the structural analogue diethylmaleinate was tested to be readily biodegradable, dimethyl maleate can be regarded as readily biodegradable.
