Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound butyl chloroformate (CAS 592-34-7, rapidly hydrolyzing): No data available.

Hydrolysis product hydrogen chloride (HCL, CAS 7647-01-0): No data available.

Hydrolysis product butanol (CAS 71-36-3): 21-d NOEC = 4.1 mg/L

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There are no chronic data available regarding the toxic effect of the parent compound butyl chloroformate (CAS 592-34-7) to aquatic invertebrates.

However, as the substance rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water to butanol (CAS 71 -36 -3), hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01-0) and carbon dioxide (CAS 124-38-9). The assessment is, therefore, based on the available data of the hydrolysis products.

For the hydrolysis products hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01-0) and carbon dioxide (CAS 124-38-9) no long-term toxicity data are available for aquatic invertebrates.

Hydrolysis product – butanol (CAS 71-36-3):

For the hydrolysis product butanol (CAS 71-36-3) a long-term study with Daphnia magna, performed according to OECD guideline 202 (part II) is available (MOE, Japan; 1996). Based on analytically verified nominal test solutions, the 21-d NOEC for reproduction was determined to be 4.1 mg/L.
