Additional information

In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the hydrolysis study (required in section 9.2.2.1.) does not need to be conducted as the testing is not technically possible.

In a hydrolysis study it is essential to be able to unambiguously analyse and quantify both the parent molecule and any metabolites formed. In the case of the rare earth metal carbonates the concern appears to focus on whether the carbonate degrades to the oxide. It is not considered that this is a true hydrolysis reaction but even if it were to be assessed it would be necessary to analytically measure both the metal carbonate and oxide separately over the duration of the study. No useful information on possible hydrolysis would be obtained by measuring the metal concentration only. It has proved impossible to develop a suitable analytical method to monitor the concentration of both the carbonate and the oxide.
