Description of key information

The 56 day NOEC for mortality and behavioural effects is >1.3 mg/L for Salmo gairdneri exposed to mixed xylenes.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater fish:
1.3 mg/L

Additional information

Walsh et al (1977) exposed adult fish to mixed xylenes for 56 days in a flow through system. Test concentrations were confirmed by analytical monitoring throughout the exposure period. No exposure linked mortality or changes in behaviour were observed at any of the test concentrations (NOEC >1.3mg/L). This study predates the implementation of GLP and study guidelines and deviates significantly from standard chronic fish toxicity tests. In particular, the use of adult fish in the chronic test and the choice of endpoints may result in a less sensitive result than if an embryo-larval or juvenile fish test had been conducted. However, it is well described and is acceptable for use as a key study bearing these restrictions in mind.
