Description of key information

Additional information

Physical state

The substance is a white to yellowish organic solid with an aromatic odour.

Melting point

The melting point of the substance is 127 °C.

Boiling point

The boiling point of the substance is 167 °C at 7 hPa (NIOSH, 1998).

Density

The relative density of 1,5 -naphthylene diisocyanate is 1.41 at 20°C. The determination of the relative density was performed according to OECD 109.

Granulometry

The particle size distribution of the product Desmodur 15 was measured by means of a dry dispersion technique as combined sieving and laser diffraction. 82 % of the particles were > 875 µm, 16.73 % of the particles were

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of the substance is 0.000008 hPa at 25 °C. The vapour pressure was determined by the gas saturation method according to OECD 104 and is determined using optimized Antoine equation

Partition coefficient

Data waiving: In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the test cannot be performed, as the substance decomposes in water within a hour (half-time approx. 1 hour).

The calculated partition coefficient (KOWWIN v 1.66) on the basis of the structural formula of 1,5 -naphthylene diisocyante is 4.37. The measured log Pow of the corresponding amine is 0.91.

Water solubility

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance is hydrolytically unstable at pH 4, 7 and 9 (half-life < 1 hour).

Surface tension

Data waiving: In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII the study does not need to be conducted. Based on structure the surface activity is not expected or can be predicted, or is a desired property of the material, as well.

Flash point

Performing of a study is scientifically not necessary. By definition, the flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid evolves vapours in such an amount that a flammable vapour / air mixture is produced. 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate is a solid a ambient temperature with a melting point of 130°C. Therefore, the hazard of the flash point is described by the flammability.

Self-ignition temperature

According to column 2 of REACH regulation the study does not need to be conducted as the melting point of the substance is

Flammability

The substance is non-flammable.

Explosiveness

It can be concluded by expert judgement that 1,5 -naphthylene diisocyanate is not explosive. The determination according to EC Guideline A 14 is not necessary

Oxidising properties

It can be concluded by expert judgement that the criteria for classification of 1,5 -naphthylene diisocyanate as ‘oxidizing substance’ are not fulfilled. The determination according to UN Test Procedure O.1 is not necessary

Stability in organic solvents

In alcohol, urethanes were formed by isocyanates.

Dissociation constant

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance is hydrolytically unstable (half-life is < 1 hour).

Viscosity

The study does not need to be performed as the test item is a solid.
