Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available
Additional information:

No studies on skin sensitization with potassium 2-methylbutan-2-olate are available. According to the REACh Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VII, column 2 point 8.3 a study on skin sensitization does not need to be conducted if the substance is classified for skin corrosion. The test substance is classified as skin corrosive based on the available information and is used as a transported intermediate. According to REACh regulation 1907/2006, Article 18, further testing is not required.

In contact with water the substance hydrolyses rapidly and forms 2-methylbutan-2-ol and potassium hydroxide. The hydrolysis products 2-methylbutan-2-ol (CAS No. 75-85-4) and potassium hydroxide (CAS No. 1310-58-3) are both not classified as skin sensitizer according to the disseminated dossiers available on the homepage of ECHA and according to Annex VI of the CLP regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Due to animal welfare reasons no test on sensitisation has been conducted as the test substance is corrosive to the skin.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the test substance hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water, the hydrolysis products are also considered to be relevant for classification. 2-methylbutan-2-ol (CAS No. 75-85-4) and potassium hydroxide (CAS No. 1310-58-3) showed no sensitizing properties to skin (according to the disseminated dossiers published on the homepage of ECHA) and are not classified as skin sensitizer or respiratory sensitization according to CLP regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. In conclusion, the test substance is not classified as skin sensitizer.
