Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
In a closed bottle test according to later published OECD 301 D, the ready biodegradation of 4-ADPA was investigated (Bayer AG, 2002). After 20 days only 8 % of the test substance was biodegraded and hence 4-ADPA is concluded as not readily biodegradable. A 100% elimination of 4-ADPA was observed in an inherent biodegradability test (Bayer AG, 1989), but ca. 30% 4-ADPA was already eliminated in the first three hours indicating fast adsorption (Currenta, 2009). Nevertheless, 70% biodegradation of 4-ADPA in 7 days can be concluded after subtracting the 30% adsorption, which indicats an inherent, ultimate biodegradability (Currenta, 2009).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
In the inherent biodegradability test (Zahn-Wellens), the elimination percentage was re-evaluated with the detected DOC concentration at zero time point (61 mg/l) of the study as initial concentration instead of theoretical DOC (100 mg/l).
Under anaerobic condition using sediment-water enrichment as inoculums, the transformation of 4-Nitro-diphenylamine to 4-ADPA in 3 to 4 weeks and then further to 4-hydroxydiphenylamine in ca. 20 days were observed (Drzyzga, O. et.al, 1995).
