Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Deviations:
yes
Principles of method if other than guideline:
First the correction factor 1 was determined. In this case the surface tension of demineralized water was determined. The value cited in the literature for the surface tension of water was devided by the measured value of the surface tension of water. In this case a correction factor at 0.952 was calculated.
For the analysis a solution of the test substance in a concentration of 0.47205 g/l was prepared. This solution was agitated with a magnetic stirrer for 27 hours and 32 minutes at ambient temperature.
The surface tension of this solution (conc. 0.47205 g/l of the test substance in demineralized water) was determined at 20°C by the ring tensiometer method. An automatic tensiometer with a built-in evaluation unit was used. A software program performed the necessary corrections. The sample was tempered at 20°C. Then the automatic measurement was initiated. The first value was measured after 4 minutes and 20 seconds. The measurement was complete after 1 hour and 22 minutes. The received value was corrected by two factors, first with the correction factor 1 (Quotient from experimentally value of water and cited literature value) and second by the Harkins and Jordan correction, as cited in the OECD Guideline.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

First the correction factor 1 was determined. In this case the surface tension of demineralized water was determined. The value cited in the literature for the surface tension of water was devided by the measured value of the surface tension of water. In this case a correction factor at 0.952 was calculated. The received value was corrected by two factors, first with the correction factor 1 (Quotient from experimentally value of water and cited literature value) and second by the Harkins and Jordan correction, as cited in the OECD Guideline.

The surface tension of the test substance is ¿ = 71.72mN/m.
