Calcium peroxide when in contact with water, on the one hand hydrolyses into hydrogen peroxide, and on the other hand results in a loss of active oxygen.
CaO2 + H2O → CaO + H2O2
2CaO2 → 2CaO + O2
2CaO2+ 2H2O → 2Ca2++ 4OH- + O2
The toxicity of the reaction mass is due to the hydrolysis product hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Under physiological conditions, calcium hydroxide ultimately dissociates into calcium cations (Ca2 +) and hydroxyl anions (OH-). Calcium, is an essential and abundantly available mineral nutrient. Hydroxyl anion is neutralised in body fluids.
Based on this information, DNELs for hydrogen peroxide and calcium hydroxide (or calcium) are presented:
Hydrogen peroxide:
No systemic effects caused by repeated oral or inhalation exposure to hydrogen peroxide were observed in the studies. This is considered to be due to the limited bioavailability of hydrogen peroxide. Consequently, it is not necessary to derive DNELs for systemic effects caused by long-term exposure. The DNEL for acute inhalation exposure is the occupational short-term exposure limit proposed by the SCOEL committee (SCOEL 2008) and the DNEL for long-term exposure is the occupational exposure limit set for hydrogen peroxide in most countries of the European Union (European Commission 2003). These limits are a STEL (15 min) of 3 mg/m3 and a 8h-TWA of 1.4 mg/m3.
Calcium hydroxide:
The Comission Directive (EU) 2017/194 established indicative occupational exposure limit values for calcium hydroxide. Therefore, no acute and long-term DNEL for workers exposed via inhalation are derived from animal studies. These limits, based on the recommendations of the Scientific Committee on Occupation Exposure Limits (SCOEL) are STEL (15 min) = 4 mg/m³ respirable dust for short-term exposure to prevent local sensory irritation due to the irritation potential of the substance, and 8 -h TWA = 1 mg/m³ respirable dust for long-term exposure to prevent local sensory irritation and decrease of lung function parameters as critical effects.
