Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

There are no experimental data available for the test item. Therefore, a read-across approach is applied. The following LC50 values after 96 h of epxosure were obtained in fish for the respective source substance:

LC50 = 5.7 mg LAS TEA/L

LC50 = 1.67 mg LAS Na/L

LC50 = 460 mg DEA/L

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Effect concentration:
1.67 mg/L

Additional information

No experimental data on short term toxicity to fish is available for the test item. However, experimental data for three source substances is available and a read-across approach is applied. Please refer to read-across justification document attached in IUCLID Section 13. Furthermore, only key studies are taken into account here. For further supporting information please refer to respective REACH registration dossier of each source substance.

LAS TEA (CAS 121617 -08 -1)

In a 96 h acute toxicity study, zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) were exposed to MARLOPON AT 50 (56.2% Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-13-alkyl derivs., compds. with triethanolamine (CAS no. 68411-31-4)) under flow through conditions. Effects were related to 56.2% Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-13-alkyl derivs., compds. with triethanolamine (CAS no. 68411-31-4) concentrations recalculated from measured concentrations of alkylbenzolsulfonate-triethanolamine. The 96 h LC50 value, based on measured concentration, was 5.7 mg Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-13-alkyl derivs., compds. with triethanolamine (CAS no. 68411-31-4)/L. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable and satisfies the guideline requirement EEC 92/69 C.1 acute fish toxicity study.

LAS NA (CAS 68411 -30 -3)

In a 96 h acute toxicity study, Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were exposed to C11.8 LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, an anionic surfactant) under static conditions. Nominal concentrations were not specified in the report. Measured concentrations were 79 % of nominal concentrations.

The 96 h LC50 value, based on measured concentration, was 1.67 mg a.i./L, with 95% CL 1.58 to 1.77 mg/L.

This toxicity study is classified as acceptable and satisfies the guideline requirement for the current USEPA OPPTS 850.1075 (1996) acute fish toxicity study.

Another study was conducted investigating acute toxicity on high molecular weight LAS, individual pure homologues, non-linear LAS components (dialkyl tetralin or indane sulfonates, DTIS), and model biodegradation intermediates (sulfophenylundecane, SOU) in order to determine whether biodegradation decreases toxicity. Toxicity tests were conducted exposing 5 fathead minnows per concentration for 48 h. LC50 was determined to be 1.7 mg/L for high molecular weight LAS. Overall, it can be concluded that the alkyl chain length is the most important factor influencing acute toxicity, which increases with alkyl chain length. And toxicity of biodegradation intermediates as significantly less than the parent LAS.

DEA (CAS 11 -42 -2)

The lowest effect value was determined in a guideline study with Oncorhynchus mykiss as test species. The fish were exposed to a series of 5 test concentrations and a control in a static approach. The 96 -h LC50 was 460 mg/L (nominal, analytically verified; PTAC, 2006). This study was selected as key study. Based on this result and the supporting information, diethanolamine is with high probability acutely not harmful to fish.

The low toxic effect of diethanolamine on fish is supported by several studies (please refer to REACH Registration dossier of DEA for more information).
