Description of key information

Melting point [hexachlorodisilane]: 3°C (OECD 102)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
3 °C

Additional information

A melting point value of 3°C was determined in a reliable study conducted according to an appropriate test protocol, and in compliance with GLP.

In available secondary sources to which reliability could not be assigned, melting points of 2.5°C, ca. -1°C, and were reported for hexachlorodisilane.

An exothermic reaction was observed at 109°C during a thermal stability test using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The study was well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles and was conducted in compliance with a known quality system (ISO 17025). However, as the substance hydrolyses very rapidly in the presence of moisture, it cannot be excluded that the observed result was attributable to the decomposition of small amounts of the hydrolysate formed on contact with atmospheric moisture during sample preparation.
