Additional information

Concerning aquatic short-term toxicity effects, tests for representatives of each trophic level (fish, Daphnia, algae, microorganisms) are available. For fish and Daphnia, studies with an aqueous solution of silicic acid, lithium salt are available, whereas for microorganisms, algae and additionally for fish, studies with a structurally related compound (sodium silicate) were considered. The test results presented hereby confirmed that the toxicity profile of silicic acid, lithium salt for aquatic species is of low concern. The most sensitive species were algae with an EC50 of 207 mg/L (biomass). For Daphnia and fish, comparable effect concentrations were reported with an LC50 in the range of 260-310 mg/L for fish, and an EC50 of > 220 mg/L for Daphnia, respectively.

Long-term toxicity data are available for algae which have been shown to be the most sensitive organisms in short-term toxicity tests, with an EC0 of 35 mg/L (biomass). As fish and daphnids were equally sensitive in acute testing, further chronic testing is not considered necessary and hence, was not conducted due to animal welfare.
