Description of key information

The acute toxicity of MTCP Crude to the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna is estimated to give a 48-Hour EC50 value of 1.9 mg/l based on read-across from an appropriate structural analogue.

Additional information

An appropriate structural analogue (3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3-en-1-yl)pent-4-en-2-ol), tradename Ebanol, has been tested for short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.

The 48 hour EC50 for the test item to Daphnia magna based on nominal test concentrations was 1.9 mg/l with 95% confidence limits of 1.6 - 2.3 mg/l. The No Observed Effect Concentration was 0.96 mg/l.

Analysis of the test preparations at 0 and 48 hours showed measured test concentrations to range from 82% to 106% of nominal value and so the results are based on nominal test concentrations only. The 48-Hour EC50 for the reference item to Daphnia magna based on nominal concentrations was 1.2 mg/l with 95% confidence limits of 1.1 – 1.3 mg/l. The No Observed Effect Concentration was 0.32 mg/l.

The study met the acceptability criteria prescribed by the study plan and was considered valid.

The aquatic toxicity of the analogue test substance (Ebanol) is anticipated to be similar to that of MTCP Crude (see read-across justification document in section 13 for details). Therefore, the 48 hour EC50 of MTCP Crude is also considered to be 1.9 mg/L.
