Conclusion on classification

The acute toxicity of Methyl isothiocyanate was evaluated with Oncorhynchus mykiss in a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 203 and GLP requirements. LC50-96 h was estimated using measured concentrations as being equal to 0.0531 mg/L.

The acute toxicity of Methyl isothiocyanate was evaluated with Daphnia magna in a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 202 and GLP requirements.EC50-48 h was estimated using measured concentrations as being equal to 0.076 mg/L.

The acute toxicity of Methyl isothiocyanate was evaluated with Pseudokirschneriella subcapitat ain a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 201 and GLP requirements.ECr50-72 h was estimated using measured concentrations as being equal to 0.58 mg/L. (For information, ECb50-72 h was estimated equal to 0.28 mg/L).

The ready biodegradability of methyl isothiocyanate was evaluated in a study performed in accordance with OECD testing guideline 301 D and GLP requirements. The maximum level of biodegradation was 0 % in 28 days. Therefore, according to these results, methyl isothiocyanate is not considered as readily biodegradable.

As a consequence, according to 67/548 CEE criteria Methyl isothiocyanate must be classified as 50/53 and Aquatic acute and chronic category I with M-factors =10 with regards to CLP criteria.
