In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, chapter 9.4., the study does not need to be conducted if the substance does not have PBT properties. In addition, a direct application of the thioglycolate anion to soil is not intented. According to chapter R.7c of ‘Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment’ (ECHA, 2012), readily biodegradable substances which are not directly applied to soil will not enter the terrestrial environment and as such there is no need for testing of soil organisms. In general, this is true for thioglycolic acid and its salts which are considered to be readily biodegradable. Additionally, these substances have only a low potential for adsorption to solids considering their low log Pow of -2.99. Thus, even if soil would be a compartment of indirect entry of the thioglycolate anion after application of sewage sludge as fertiliser, it is expected that residues within the sludge are negligible. In conclusion, tests with terrestrial organisms are not relevant due to exposure considerations.

Studies with birds are not needed as thioglycolic acid and its salts have only a low potential for bioaccumulation based on their low log Pow and there is no indication that the substance is toxic to mammals.
