Additional information

Data on the acute toxicity of the target substance Isopentyl oleate (CAS 627-89-4) to aquatic algae are not available. The assessment was therefore based on a study conducted with the structurally similar substances Isopropyl oleate (CAS 112-11-8) and Isobutyl oleate (CAS 84988-79-4) as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 6.1 and within the analogue justification section 13.

The acute study on the source substance Isobutyl oleate (CAS 84988-79-4) was performed as a limit test according to the EU guideline 92/69/EWG and GLP (Berger, 1995). The test organism Scenedesmus subspicatus was exposed to the test substance for 72 h at a nominal test concentration of 100 mg/L. The test was performed with and without separation of undissolved test material. With undissolved test substance present, algal growth was significantly inhibited (EC50 (72 h) <100 mg/L). However, when the undissolved phase was separated, no effects on growth were observed. An EL50 (72h) >100 mg/L based on the nominal loading rate (WAF) was determined. The inhibition can be thus regarded as associated physical effects caused by the undissolved material present. It can be concluded that the substance has no toxic effects on test organism up to the limit of water solubility.

Based on the available result from one structurally related source substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that Isopentyl oleate (CAS 627-89-4) will not exhibit effects to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility.
