Description of key information

Parent compound: In contact with water, the substance will hydrolyse rapidly. 
Hydrolysis product methanol: According to structural properties, hydrolysis is not probable. In addition, the substance is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.

Hydrolysis of methyl chloroformate was tested in a GLP study following OECD TG 111. At 25 °C the half-lives at pH 4, 7 and 9 were determined to be 14.2, 8.64 and << 5 minutes, respectively. The corresponding rate constants were 8.12E-04 s-1 at pH 4 and 1.34E-03 s-1 at pH 7. The predicted hydrolysis products methanol, HCl and CO2 were identified by gas chromatography using marker standards (Safepharm, 2003).

According to Kollig et al. (1993), Boethling & Mackay (2000) and Harris (1990), methanol is generally resistant to hydrolysis because it does not contain any labile functional groups. In addition, the substance is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (Price et al. 1974, Wagner, 1976).
