RANGE-FINDING / PRELIMINARY STUDY

A bioconcentration study of the test item in carp, Cyprinus carpio, was conducted in compliance with the Test Methods Concerning a New Chemical Substance (Kashinhou). Based on a 96hr-LC50 of the test substance for zebra-fish (Danio rerio) (1.95 mg/L), two concentration levels were selected: 0.02 mg/L as a high exposure level and 0.002 mg/L as a low exposure level.

The test substance is a reaction product consisting of the main component (composition ratio 93.0%) and its isomer (1.1%), and three minor components (less than 1% for each component).

As the results of this study, the residual concentrations of p,p-isomer and m,p-isomer in fish were the detectable Umit or less, and the exposure period therefore was terminated after 28 days of exposure when the steady-states of these components were assumed to have been reached.

The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of p,p-isomer and m,p-isomer in fish were 1 fold or less and 2 folds or less, respectively, at the high exposure level (0.02 mg/L group) and 10 folds or less and 20 folds or less, respectively, at the low exposure level (0.002 mg/L group).

In this study conducted to generally accepted scientific standards the test material (EC 444-860-9) was determined to not not bioaccumulate in organisms.

Description of key information

 The test substance does not accumulate in organisms.  The result of a bioaccumulation study with Cyprinus carpio following the procedures of the OECD guideline 305C showed a BCF of <10 for a test concentration of 0.002 mg/L (Institute of Ecotoxicology Co., 2005). Even though DMSO was used as solubilizer, the study is regarded as valid since both test concentrations (0.02 and 0.002 mg/L) are well below the water solubility of 9.9 mg/L of the test substance.
