Overall aquatic toxicity: With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.

Short-term toxicity to fish:

2 -Morpholinoethanol was tested in a static limit acute toxicity test according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412, Part 15 withLeuciscus idus. The 96 -h LC50 was > 500 mg/L (BASF AG 84/0420). The test concentration were not analytically verified, but are assumed to be stable over the test period.

In an acute toxicity similar to OECD 203 under flow through conditions and with analytical verification of test item concentrations, the 96 -h LC50 was determined to be 2710 mg/L (Oncorhynchus mykiss; Geiger et al., 1985).

Based on these results it can be concluded with a high probability that 2 -morpholinoethanol is not acutely toxic for fish.

Long-term toxicity to fish:

No data available and not required.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

The acute toxicity of 2 -morpholinoethanol (CAS 622 -40 -2) was assessed via a read-across approach since no experimental data are available for this substance. Test data forDaphnia magnawere taken from studies with other N-substituted morpholine structures. All studies are reliable with restrictions since no chemical verification of the test item concentrations was performed.

The following data were used:

- 4 -Methylmorpholine (CAS 109 -02 -4): 48 -h EC50 > 100 mg/L (Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, Part C.2; BASF AG, 1991; Study No. 1/91/0270/50/1)

- 4 -Morpholinecarbaldehyde (CAS 4394 -85 -8): 48 -h EC50 > 500 mg/L (Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, Part C.2; BASF AG, 1987; Study No. 1/1679/2/88)

- 4 -Ethylmorpholine (CAS 100 -74 -3): 48 -h EC50 = 580 mg/L (DIN 38412, Part 11; BASF AG, 1989; Study No. 01/89/0733)

Taking these values, it can be concluded that 2 -morpholinoethanol is acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates with a high probability.

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

No data available and not required.

Growth inhibition to aquatic algae:

The toxicity of 2 -morpholinoethanol (CAS 622 -40 -2) was assessed via a read-across approach since no experimental data are available for this substance. Test data for aquatic green algae were taken from studies with other N-substituted morpholine structures. All studies are reliable with restrictions since no chemical verification of the test item concentrations was performed.

The following data were used:

- 4 -Ethylmorpholine (CAS 100 -74 -3): 72 -h ErC50 = 580 mg/L (DIN 38412, Part 9;Desmodesmus subspicatus; BASF AG 1989; Study No. 01/89/0733)

- 4 -Methylmorpholine (CAS 109 -02 -4): 72 -h EC50 = 802 mg/L (Hüls, 1992, cited in KBwS, 1992; Sheet no. 763)

- 4 -Morpholinecarbaldehyde (CAS 4394 -85 -8): 72-h ErC50 = 23880 mg/L (DIN 38412, Part 9;Desmodesmus subspicatus; BASF AG 1990; Study No. 01/90/143)

Taking these values, it can be concluded that 2 -morpholinoethanol is acutely not harmful to aquatic algae with a high probability.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The inhibiting effect of 2 -morpholinoethanol (CAS 622 -40 -2) on the respiration activity of domestic activated sludge was assessed via a read-across approach since no experimental data are available for this substance. Test data for toxicity to microorganisms were taken from studies with other N-substituted morpholine structures.

The following results were considered:

4 -Acetylmorpholin (CAS 1696 -20 -4):

- BASF AG (1992; Study no. 91/1665/08/1): OECD 209: 30 min EC20 > 1000 mg/L

- BASF AG (1992; Study no. 91/1665/70/2): DIN 38412, Part 8: 16-h EC10 > 10000 mg/L

4 -Methylmorpholine (CAS 109 -02 -4):

- BASF AG (1991; 1/91/0270/08/1): OECD 209: 30 min. EC20 > 1000 mg/L

4 -Ethylmorpholine (CAS 100 -74 -3):

- BASF AG (1987; Study no. 01.451/86): similar to OECD 209 (industrial activated sludge): 30 min EC20 > 600 mg/L

- BASF AG (1990; Study no. 91/1890733): DIN 38412, Part 8: 16-h EC10 = 1151 mg/L

4 -Morpholinecarbaldehyde (CAS 4394 -85 -8):

- BASF AG (1987; Study no. 9/0553/87): DIN 38412, Part 8: 16-h EC10 > 2000 mg/L

Regarding these results, the toxicity to microorganisms is low. Therefore, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
